남이섬 종합휴양지 Namiseom Island to the Sonata

남이섬 종합휴양지 Namiseom Island aka 나미 아일랜드 Nami Island.

Namiseom Island was formed as a result of the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam. It is a half moon shaped (462,809㎡) isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a great victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo (reign 1455 ~ 1468). 

Namiseom Island is 63 km away from Seoul in the direction of Chuncheon, and is famous for its beautiful tree lined roads. The island is 30 minutes away from Chuncheon and an hour away from suburbs of Seoul. Since it is not far from Seoul, many couples and families come to visit. 

A special feature of Namiseom Island is that there are no telephone poles. This is because all electric wires were built underground to keep the natural feeling of the landscape. The complex is 553,560 square yards with chestnut trees and poplar trees around the isle. 

Took a subway to Gapyeong Station and a shuttle bus to Nami Island.

남이섬 짚와이어 Namiseom Zip Wire

Namiseom Zip Wire is an eco-friendly leisure facility established by Gapyeong County Office in partnership with Gyeonggi Tourism Organization and Namiseom Inc. It is one of the biggest zipline facilities in Asia. Riders start from an 80 meter-high tower and zoom down along a wire cable to Jaraseom (640m away) and Namiseom / Nami Island (940m away).

After the Namiseom Zip Wire, you can spot the entrance / ticket counter / immigration to Nami Island.

After the Imigration Doors, you will enter the River Line and wait for the ferry to ferry you across to Nami Island.

Winter Sonata, the 2002 Korean drama credited with kicking off the Korean Wave (Hallyu) was filmed on Nami Island (and Chuncheon). The famous 첫 키스 first kiss was set on Namiseom as well as were other important scenes in the drama. Tourists come from all over Asia to retrace the star-crossed lovers steps.

In December 2010 Naminara Republic, Nami Island was designated a UNICEF Child Friendly Park. This was a first for Korea and only the 14th park in the world to receive such a designation. Nami was selected for this honor as a result of their ongoing financial support of UNICEF and cultural activities for children such as the Nami Island International Children’s Book Festival (Nambook). Nami Island has also been designated an “Easy Place” by The Human Rights Forum of Persons with Disabilities in Korea (PWDK) due to the ease of access they offer to all visitors.
